03/01/2018 Bioinstrumentation is the use of bioelectronic instruments for the recording or transmission of physiological information. It refers to the high-tech instrumentation used to conduct research in the biological sciences. There has been a revolution in biological research in the last 20 years due in large part to advances in bioinstrumentation. Molecular biologists that have done extensive research in the structure and function of genes and proteins were limited to studying one or a few genes during their career. Instrumentation advances used in techniques such as DNA sequencing, microarray analysis and mass spectrometry have allowed scientists to simultaneously study all the genes and proteins in an organism and have given rise to the new fields of genomics and proteomics.


The field of bioinstrumentation has fused different fields for the common purpose of developing new ways of managing and treating disease and disability. Biomedical devices combine biology, sensors, electronics, microcontrollers and computer programming along with traditional disciplines such as biology, optics, mechanics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry and electronics.
