Although called 'steam cleaning' it is in fact a hot water extraction method of carpet cleaning. Hot water is sprayed into the carpet while being vacuumed out at the same time. Dirt and debris are dislodged along with the water. If steam was actually used in the cleaning, the carpet could be damaged and actually shrink or buckle. Most manufacturers recommend water extraction as a preferred method for cleaning their carpet, although they call it steam cleaning.

You should know that detergent attracts dirt and stains. That is in fact WHY it removes dirt from clothes. But when used on carpet it is much more difficult to rinse out thoroughly and it is prone to being left in the carpet fibers. Since detergent actually attracts and binds with dirt and stain molecules, the carpet will actually become dirtier sooner, just making matters worse..
