Last Thursday was Consumer Attorneys of San Diego's "Lessons in Lawsuits: Premises Liability" conference, and boy did it deliver! Our incredible speakers broke down the anatomy of a premises liability case from beginning to end. The day was absolutely jam-packed with practical information, and everyone - from brand new attorneys to seasoned vets - learned something new. If you couldn't be there, here are just a couple (of the many) take-aways: 1. Time is of the essence in investigating a premises case. Get out to the scene ASAP, and bring an expert if you can! 2. GoogleEarth is your friend. Use it! 3. Government claims are more likely to go to trial. But, if you want to give your case its best chance at settlement, do not withhold information (the other side will get it anyways), and make your settlement demand early to give the other side plenty of time to evaluate it. 4. Use the Defendant's own resources against them. For example, company websites and their own policies & procedures can be a goldmine. 5. And, most importantly, if you can't find a violation (code, custom & practice, policy & procedure, comparison, or even reasonable expectation), don't take the case! I spent last Friday at the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego Business of Law Symposium. I’ve had my own Elder Abuse law firm for more than 10 years, and still learned SO much from some of the absolute best in the business. A few of my takeaways: 1) There is no one way to run a successful firm. Find a way that is authentically you. 2) Find an area of practice that you are passionate about. That passion will speak volumes when you are trying to attract clients and employees. 3) Invest in your people. Make sure you are giving them the tools and support to grow. This includes yourself - whether it is professional growth or self care - invest in yourself just like you would a valued employee. 4) If there is some aspect of running your business that you don’t excel at or don’t enjoy - outsource it. Find someone who will do that task justice and enjoy doing it! You cannot do everything yourself and expect to have a thriving business and/or happy life. If you can’t tell, I cannot say enough good things about this event, and the brilliant speakers who shared their time and wisdom with us!
