CNN just uploaded this great video covering the trials and triumph of a teenage boy over treatment-resistant depression—thanks to ketamine therapy (Skip to 2:20-2:45 for the teen's words on the rapid relief and unique perspective that ketamine offers for breaking loose out of a mental rut). The teen's mother details her and her son's treatment journey. She speaks poignantly to the heartbreak of watching her star student's bright personality wither under the weight of intrusive negative thoughts and self-harm. The mother then also speaks to the unparalleled joy of—after just a couple IV treatments—seeing her son break out of his depressive hole. "I have my son back." Traditional antidepressants require 6-16 weeks to take effect, but the benefits of ketamine may be felt within one week. This is why psychiatrists are turning to ketamine, especially when a patient is experiencing suicidal thoughts. "We only have two currently FDA-approved treatments in the US for child and adolescent depression, and so with that limitation, we have to rely on off-label choices," explains Stanford University's Dr. Manpreet Kaur Singh, "for patients who are struggling with multiple treatment failures."
