Starting in 2025, any healthcare practitioner who requires continuing education hours must attend at least one hour of cultural competency training. This one-hour course can be counted toward meeting the minimum credit hours required for your profession. This new continuing education requirement applies to most licensed healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses, optometrists, psychologists, pharmacists, dentists, social workers, therapists, and counselors. Cultural competency is defined as a "set of integrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills that enables a health care professional or organization to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities."
