Here in the northeast we are currently experiencing a heat wave.  Yes, it is summer…and yes, it gets hot during this season.  According to Wikipedia, a heat wave is measured relative to the usual weather in the area and relative to normal temperatures for the season.  

If you are experiencing unusually hot weather, here are some tips to stay cool according to Reader’s Digest:

-Make a peppermint tea mist by brewing a pot of peppermint tea and placing it in the fridge for several hours.  Pour it into a spray bottle and mist yourself.  The menthol gives your skin a fresh feeling.

-Chill your mattress by filling socks with rice and placing them in the freezer by day and at night about a half hour before getting into bed, put the sock between the sheets.

-Eat spicy food, which increases blood circulation so you will sweat and feel cooler as the sweat dries.

-Lower your body temperature by applying a bottle with ice-cold water to pressure points like ankles, wrists and behind your knees.

Autumn is upon us and we thought you might enjoy some fun facts about pumpkins.

1. The word pumpkin comes from the Greek word "pepon," which means large melon. Pumpkins are native to the Americas.
2. More than 1.3 million pounds of pumpkins were produced in the U.S. in 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 
3. A single pumpkin vine can grow up to 30 feet in length and contains both male and female blossoms. The male blossoms attract bees, which are necessary for pollination of the female blooms.
4. According to Guinness World Records, the record for the heaviest pumpkin was set in 2010 with a pumpkin that weighed 2,323 pounds. The record for the largest pumpkin pie, also set in 2010, was 3,699 pounds. The record for the fastest carving of a jack-o'-lantern was 16.47 seconds and was set in 2013.
5. Pumpkin is low in calories (about 80 for 1 cup puree). It's a very good source of fiber, vitamins A and C, and the minerals iron, potassium and manganese. Pumpkin seeds are also a source of omega-3 fatty acids.
6. Pumpkins that are specifically grown for eating are smaller, sweeter and less watery than the larger, stringy pumpkins sold for carving.
7. Pumpkin flowers, leaves and seeds are all edible.
8. Pumpkin is a versatile ingredient. It can be made into a soup, sauce, puree, mash or custard (pie filling). It can be sauteed or roasted. It can be a main ingredient in pancakes, muffins and bread.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the official start of fall is Friday, September 22 at 4:02PM EDT. This day is also called the Autumnal equinox.  By definition, Equinox means “equal night”; night and day are about the same length.  

Fall is also defined by nights of below-freezing temperatures combined with days of temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  From Friday on, the temperatures begin to drop and the days start to get shorter than the nights.

Get ready for the Great Eclipse

Excited about it? We sure are!  On Monday, August 21^st, a total eclipse of the sun takes place. Even if you are not in the direct pathway of the total eclipse, you will see a partial eclipse.  That is still something at which to marvel.  Many Walsh Envelope Company clients are located in the direct pathway of this incredible event.  So, in between filing and posting, take time to look up in the skies (safely!)

February is finally here you know what that means, right? SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!!  The most popular Sunday “Fun-day” celebration across the United States. Just like in the old days a king was dethroned and a new king crowned. The Super Bowl will determine who wears the crown in football after a long series of elimination games. Congratulation to this year’s teams- the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.
