June Share-the-Plate: Self Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS)

The Self Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS) is run by and for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Started over 35 years ago by people who lived in New York state institutions, our mission is to speak up for ourselves and others.
We teach people with I/DD how to advocate for themselves, both individually and systemically, start self-advocacy groups, and host local gatherings and conferences. Self-advocates trained and supported by SANYS have consulted with the UUCB on the recent plans to make the church more accessible, successfully advocated for a City of Buffalo ADA Coordinator, and won $750,000 for the NFTA to study paratransit expansion and improvements.
