Arthur Armstrong, MD, PhD

Dr. Armstrong is dedicated to providing the very best in care for a vast array of musculoskeletal diseases and autoimmune conditions, commonly and collectively known as rheumatic diseases.

How are Rheumatic Diseases Diagnosed and Treated?

The complex nature of rheumatic diseases causes diagnosis to sometimes be a challenge. The first visit to a rheumatologist will typically include the collection of complete medical and family histories, a physical exam and an assessment of symptoms. The results of any prior testing will be reviewed, and tests may be ordered. When a diagnosis has been reached through careful review of all available information, a personalized treatment plan is created.

Treatment can consist of referrals to physical therapy or other specialists, injections therapy and medications, depending upon the patient’s unique needs. During follow-up visits, a rheumatologist will treat chronic symptoms, discuss medications and suggest changes. Disability prevention or the recovery of function will also be a focus, along with quality of life concerns and coping systems. Patients can receive injections and infusion therapies at our facility during these visits as well, if needed.

Whenever possible, remission is always the goal, but we also focus on the day-to-day management of chronic conditions.
