12/20/2012 The launch of Unpenguin
is here, just in the nick of time. The web application was formulated and
created by Steve Floyd,
Dallas digital marketing agency AXZM's founder and CEO. The goal of the
application is to repair the damage done by Penguin, Google's newest algorithm.
It
was no small mess. The number of websites in excess of 700,000 were negatively
affected by Penguin. Low-quality backlinks (links that point to your website
from other websites) were in Google's crosshairs, or as they like to call them,
“Unnatural Links.” It was an attempt to clean up the web that ended up
penalizing not only the bad sites, but many of the good ones, too.
That's
why we created Unpenguin.
One
of the biggest problems is that many owners of websites aren't aware that there
are unnatural links associated with their website. Basically, here's the
typical story: A small business owner looking to spend less on a website will
hire a not-so-reputable SEO company to do the job. The SEO company, in turn,
will throw together a plan that works for a while, but will eventually get
penalized by Google some years down the road. As a result, the company will
lose their search engine ranking without fully understanding the reason.
On
the subject of the framework behind the penalties, Floyd said: “Most of the use
cases coming in so far point to low quality. That seems to be the underlying
theme in websites that were penalized.”
Google
has offered a solution to assist webmasters in fixing the problem. Sort of.
It's really more of a stop-gap.
At
this year's PubCon in Las Vegas, Nevada, Matt Cutts, Google's chief of web
spam, announced Google's new Disavow Links tool. The tool gives webmasters the
ability to remove low quality links pointed at their websites from
uncooperative domains, but Google failed to give a tool that tells webmasters
which links are bad and which ones are good. That's where Unpenguin comes in.
It's the only tool available that allows webmasters to locate poor-quality
links.
Though
it's private beta installment has only been going on for a few days, Unpenguin
is already starting to make heads turn. At PubCon, where Cutts made the Google
Disavow Links announcement, speaker Joe Laratro mentioned Unpenguin in two
separate presentations. This much buzz saw attendees flocking to sign up for
the service, only hours after its announcement.
The
algorithm that comprises Unpenguin uses Ahrefs API and Mozscape, which carry a
great deal of authority in the world of link data. Its makeup also includes a
group of metrics that were developed AXZM CEO and founder, Steve Floyd. These
metrics evaluate the link quality and reports recommendations on link removal.
If a large batch of links needs to be removed, users can export the list as a
CSV in order to speed things up.
In
short, Unpenguin allows good websites the potential to quickly regain their
lost search engine ranking. The process only takes a few minutes, about five to
ten, depending on the profile of your backlinks.
Unpenguin
is currently in its private beta installment, which means it's only available
through invitation. But, soon a public beta version will be ready for
subscriptions.
