07/26/2021 Depending on whom you talk to, streetwear has been around since the 1980s/90s. In the early 2000's, however, streetwear became exceedingly popular. This may have been due, in part, to the surprising influence skaters were having on pop culture.
The rise of streetwear and its influence was greatly contributed to by clothing brands like Stussy and Supreme. Dominating the scene across America, they were in their prime in the 2000s. Since then, however, streetwear's audience has broadened and continuously developed.
What teenage boys and skaters once claimed as their very own style is now the go-to outfit for everyone from musicians to models. While not consistently holding the top spot in the fashion industry, streetwear never really goes away. It may play second fiddle to another trend here and there, but it always bounces back. One reason could be, for everyone and anyone, it is an extremely viable outfit to put together.
Let's take a closer look at streetwear.
In the BeginningStyles that were hitting the streets in the 1980s are seen reflected in brands today. In recent years, they've gained a lot of momentum. Many of the biggest names in streetwear originated in California. This should come as no surprise since, when it comes to men's urban clothing, it's always been a hub.
Today, the streetwear market is so desirable that famous sport brands are tapping into it: Puma, Adidas, Nike, etc. The pioneers of street fashion, however, are still going strong. The top ones are Supreme, Bathing Ape, and Off-White. Despite their growing success, they have maintained their integrity.
Streetwear’s Biggest InfluencesDesigners like Raf Simmons and Virgil Abloh can thank brands like Stussy and Supreme for paving the way. The new designers are merging high fashion with streetwear, creating streetwear pieces and styles using luxurious materials for a premium product. Now, favoring casual yet premium streetwear, celebrities are dumping their usual glamorous attire. In fact, had it not been for the adoption of the look by celebrities, it may not be where it is today.
The Influence of Social MediaWhen it comes to what's popular and trendy, major influencers include models and social media. Once designer streetwear was seen on models like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, it was automatically cool. If it's shown on Facebook (and other social media sites) – it must be awesome!
