I Got Sick of Doomscrolling, So I Built a Button to Delete “Those” Topics From My Feed

How I reclaimed my morning routine by building the “Bliss Box” and why algorithms shouldn’t decide what you read.It started every morning at 7:00 AM.The alarm would go off, I’d roll over, grab my phone, and open a news app. My intention was just to wake up and see what was happening in the world of Tech or Science.

The Problem: The Stress of “Doom-scrolling”Instead, within 30 seconds, my chest would tighten.
  • Scandal involving Politician A.
  • Terrifying update on the economy.
  • Meaningless gossip about a celebrity couple I’ve never heard of.
I wasn’t getting informed; I was getting anxious. I was “doom-scrolling” before I had even brushed my teeth.
The problem wasn’t the news itself. It is important to stay informed. The problem was that I had zero control over the menu. The algorithms were force-feeding me rage-bait because they knew it would keep me clicking.
I looked for a setting in my favourite apps to say, “Please, just for this week, stop showing me anything related to the Election.”
That setting didn’t exist. So, being a student and a developer, I decided to build it myself.
The Problem With “Smart” FeedsMost modern news feeds claim to be “personalised,” but they are actually just “engagement-obsessed.” If you click on one article about a disaster because you are worried, the algorithm thinks, “Oh, they love disasters! Let’s give them 10 more.”
Suddenly, your entire feed is a horror movie.
I realised I needed a manual override. I didn’t want an AI to guess what I didn’t want to see. I wanted to tell it directly.
Building the “Bliss Box”I started coding a project called BlissInfo News. The goal wasn’t to build the biggest media empire in the world. The goal was to build the calmest one. I wanted a clean, simple feed with one distinct feature that the big guys were afraid to add: The Bliss Box.
The concept is stupidly simple. It’s a text box at the top of the app.
  1. You are tired of hearing about “Taylor Swift”? Type it in the box.
  2. You are stressed about “Inflation”? Type it in the box.
  3. You hit Enter.
Poof. Every article containing those keywords vanishes from your feed instantly. You are left with the news you actually want to read whether that’s sports, coding tutorials, or world events that actually matter to you.

The Solution: The “Bliss Box” in ActionSelective Ignorance is a SuperpowerSome people might argue that filtering news creates an “echo chamber.” I disagree. I think it creates focus.
Tim Ferris and other productivity experts talk about the “Low Information Diet.” You cannot process every tragedy on Earth and still function as a human being. You have to curate your inputs.
If you are a developer, you need to know about the latest AI updates. You don’t need to know what a reality TV star tweeted 10 minutes ago.
By filtering out the noise, you aren’t burying your head in the sand. You are clearing the mud off your windshield so you can actually drive.
The ResultSince I started using my own app, my mornings have changed. I still read the news, but I don’t feel that spike of cortisol anymore.

The Result: Calm and Focused ReadingIf a specific topic starts dominating the news cycle and annoying me, I just block it. When I’m ready to read about it again, I unblock it. I am the editor-in-chief of my own consumption.
I decided to release this tool publicly because I know I’m not the only one feeling burnt out by the 24-hour news cycle.
If you are tired of the noise, you can try it out. It’s called Bliss Info News.
You can use the web version here: BlissInfoNews.com Or get the app on Google Play.
Stop letting the algorithm ruin your morning. Take control of your feed.
