The Importance Of Exercise For Seniors

By Discovery Village At Dominion

04/25/2022 It becomes more and more important, as we age, to stay healthy, remain active, and maintain independence as much as possible. Some 10 or more hours a day are spent lying down or sitting, on average, where retirement age individuals are concerned. This age group is particularly sedentary. Age-related balance issues and weakness could be – rather than being related to old age – linked to inactivity.
For this reason, and more, it is imperative that a program of exercise for seniors be participated in by your aging loved one. This does not refer to a heavy-duty, high-impact, highly stressful workout. A person’s overall mobility can significantly be improved by just a bit of exercise. What’s important is to get your heart rate up and your muscles moving.
Let’s take a look at why, particularly for older adults, exercise is so important.
Help Reduce Alzheimer’s And Dementia DevelopmentOne of the best ways to reduce dementia risks is through participating in regular physical activity. Studies have repeatedly shown this, and the Alzheimer Society agrees. Remember, as well, to exercise your mind at every given opportunity.
Increase Independence, Confidence, and SociabilityA person’s fear of falling can be reduced and improvements in balance and functional reach are achieved through regular physical activity. It’s fun to meet new people or catch up with old friends by doing something as easy as taking a walk around the park. Sociability and independence are both increased, in part, through exercise.
Increase Overall Well-Being and HappinessA person’s overall well-being and mental health are boosted, and physical health improved, by taking part in exercise regularly. The chance of developing depression is lessened as well. In fact, pain tolerance can actually be heightened when physical activity is increased.
Reduce Heart Attack, Stroke, and Other Physical Disease RisksEngage in regular cardio exercise to increase the flow of blood to the heart using cycling or brisk walking. This helps to reduce high blood pressure risks, makes the heart muscle stronger, and reduces other coronary-related disease risks. You may also help avoid arthritis, reduce high cholesterol, and reduce diabetes.
Improve Muscle Mass, Bone Density, and Reduce the Risk of Fracturing Bones and/or FallingCoordination, bone density, and muscle strength are increased through regular exercise. For increasing balance, and thereby reducing the risk of falls, this is extremely helpful. What’s more, jogging, walking, or various other weight-bearing exercises can help reduce the risk of fracturing bones and developing osteoporosis. It can also help increase bone strength.
