How Attic Insulation Impacts Your Roof

12/03/2015 Attic Insulation and Your Roof
Did you know your attic insulation plays a major role with your roofing system? In the winter, if you have inadequate insulation in your attic, the heat from your living area rises into the attic causing your attic temperature to be above the “outside” air temperature. This difference cause A) condensation to accumulate in your attic and B) ice damming on top of your roof creating leaks on the interior walls and ceilings.
Common Insulation Problem
Poor attic insulation is a common problem in the United States. According to the Department of Energy, (D.O.E.), approximately 80 percent of US households are under insulated.
With proper attic insulations, you are looking to save as much as 20 percent of your house’s heating/cooling cost. But you can do something about this today.
Do You Have Enough Insulation?
The first thing you need to do if you want to know if your home needs better attic insulation is to determine your home’s R-value. This is the insulation system’s ability to decrease the amount of air flow (both hot and cold) that goes through it.
To learn what your home’s R-value is, speak with us today to evaluate your home. We will be happy to help.
Obviously, you want your home’s R-value to be as close as possible to the DOE recommendations. This means that your household can keep a set temperature. For our region, an R-value of R-49 is recommended.
