12/26/2009 A top listing in Google is what brings in revenue.
Traditional Advertising Simply DOES NOT WORK, not any more.

Google IS the shopping center of the world, wake up and smell the coffee, if you're not listed in the top 10 of Google search results... you simply do not exist.

That said there are several places within a top ten search results page (serps, google that phrase if you want your company to survive)

The mantra in sucessful real estate is the same as the mantra of advertising:
you need just 3 things to survive (note we're not just talking about sucess here, we're talking about your businesses survival)

1. location
2. location
3. location

Those are the 3 things your advertising need to have in order for your company (or your job) to survive.

And what is the location we're talking about? Google LOCAL search results.
If your company does not dominate the local Google search results... you're not going to have a job for very much longer.

Now that we've got that understood, you've also got to realize that there are 3 locations with said location:
a Google search results page is broken down into 3 more distinct parts:

1. Sponsored or Paid Listings (aka Google Adwords)
2. Main body of search results (aka the "organic listings")
3. Google Local (aka Googlemaps)

All of last year I preached getting a top organic search listing (or multiple rankings on the same page, that page being the first page of search results, aka the "top 10" as very few people click past the first page of results.

Now people's purchasing habits (which is synonomous with saying their search habits, as those 2 things are one and the same now) have changed.

No One wants to be "sold to", the research bears this out.

sponsored listings (paid advertisments) do NOT generate the sales they once did.
Organic listings are much better because they are most trusted by searchers (your customers)

For some reason (which I reveal in my main blog) people trust a Googlemaps listing because they think it's a trusted body deciding who gets to rank #1
