Asphalt mix design takes into account the climate where the pavement will be used, since binder behaves differently across the range of temperatures a pavement will experience throughout the year. In a climate like Grand Junction's, where summer surface temperatures can be quite high and winter temperatures can drop well below freezing, the binder needs to remain flexible enough in cold weather to avoid becoming brittle and cracking, while also remaining stiff enough in hot weather to resist rutting under traffic. Binder grades are selected to perform across this range, and the aggregate gradation, the mix of different particle sizes within the aggregate, also affects how the mix performs under these conditions.
