01/14/2021 Sclerotherapy cosmetically treats unsightly or painful veins by using nonsurgical injection techniques. The varicose vein treatment typically takes less than an hour in a providers office depending on the number of veins or capillaries treated. For patients embarrassed by varicose or spider veins, the technique provides excellent results. Treated veins usually disappear within weeks although some may require longer. This procedure complements plastic surgery.
How Does It Work?
A local anesthetic might be used at the injection site, but sedation is not required. A small needle is used to inject fluid into a vein causing it to swell shut or collapse, and the blocked blood supply reroutes to other veins.
Pressure is then applied to the treatment site to ensure the vein remains closed. Patients typically walk very soon after the vein treatment and usually return to their daily routine.
Strenuous physical activity may be discouraged for a few days to allow the body time to recover. Over a couple of weeks, the body reabsorbs the collapsed vein with few adverse side effects.
Sclerotherapy treats the following conditions:
- Spider Veins
- Varicose Veins
- Reticular Veins
- Telangiectasia
