Infertility treatment: Options we don’t know

06/18/2018 It’s good that IVF is getting more common amongst us and now we know what IVF is. But do we know that there are other options too, that are used to treat infertility? Probably we don’t. Therefore, this article helps you explore some fewer known options that can help you in treating infertility.
Fertility Medication or Fertility Drugs
This treatment involves consumption of drugs like Clomiphene and gonadotropins, these drugs work by triggering the release of one or more eggs in ovulation cycle. This is usually the first recommended solution for infertility cases, it can also be combined with a different treatment option. These drugs have certain minor side effects including breast tenderness, ovarian cysts, nausea, hot flashes, mood swings, pelvic pain, thick and dry cervical mucus, headaches, mild depression, and other visual symptoms. Medication is known for having a success rate of 30-40% in treating fertility problems.
Surgery
Surgery is known for treating genetic issues and opening blocked fallopian tubes, removal of fibroids, removal of tissue endometriosis, and treating the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Two commonly used surgical procedures include laparoscopy and laparotomy. In laparoscopy surgery is done with the assistance of a camera and multiple small incisions whereas, laparotomy involves larger incision.
In vitro fertilization (IVF)
This is a process where the egg is fertilized outside the human body, In this process, the eggs are removed from the ovaries and then are combined with a sperm of the partner of a donor. On successful fertilization, embryos are transferred to the uterus. This procedure has a success rate of over 40 percent in the women who are under 34 years of age.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
ICSI is quite similar to IVF and is often used along with IVF to help the fertilization process, where male fertility could be the problem. In this process, a microscopic needle is used to draw a sperm from male testicles and then it is injected into a single egg. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the uterus. This process also has a success rate of above 40 percent in females who are under 34 years of age.
Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT)
In Gamete intrafallopian transfer, the sperm and the eggs are mixed with each other in a lab and this mixture is then transferred to fallopian tubes to allow natural fertilization. Since the development of IVF, this method is very rarely used. It has a success rate of about 26 percent.
Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)
In this process, the sperm and the eggs are fertilized in the lab, and the doctors wait till cell embryos called zygote are formed. Once their formation occurs, the doctor places them in fallopian tubes using a laparoscopic surgery.
