03/29/2021 A lot of astronomy lovers are still celebrating and cheering for joy for the historical landing on Mars of NASA’s Perseverance Rover which was launched on July 30, 2020, and landed on February 18, 2021, for NASA’s Mars 2020 Mission.
The design of the body of the Perseverance Rover is similar to the Curiosity rover which was launched on November 26, 2011, and landed on August 6, 2012, and still on Mars until now, too.
Its landing site is the Jezero crater which has a diameter of 49.0 km (30.4 mi). It is believed that it is a lake and may have life developed before.
One of the interesting parts of this mission is that it has a Mars helicopter named “Ingenuity.” Its main job is to test the first powered flight on Mars. The helicopter will be tested to take off a few feet from the ground. If it is successful, the team will attempt farther distance and greater altitude.
The Main Tasks of the PERSEVERANCE Rover are the following:
- Seek signs of ancient life.
- Collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) for possible return to Earth.
- Testing oxygen production from the Martian atmosphere to prepare for future manned missions.
- Looking for habitability: identify past environments capable of supporting microbial life.
What do you think? Can NASA’s Perseverance Rover find signs of ancient life and will they successfully send the rock samples to Earth? Leave us a comment below and express your opinion.
