San Diego is a picturesque port enjoying year-round beautiful weather. Founded by the Spanish in 1769 as San Diego de Alcala, the port initially languished after Mexico declared its independence. At the turn of the 19th century, the U.S. Navy Coaling Station was established and the military started playing an increasing role in San Diego’s economy. Nowadays, San Diego enjoys a more diversified economy comprised of telecommunications, biotechnology and commerce. Today, San Diego has a beaming downtown district featuring international restaurants and a lively nightlife.
