There is a lot of myth around the idea and practice of hypnosis. Some people fear hypnosis because they think they will lose control and someone will make them do something they do not want to do. They envision clucking like a chicken or doing some other ridiculous act with no recollection of the event. These are misconceptions based upon stage hypnosis and television shows.
Hypnosis is a common state of mind that we all experience throughout the day. When you are lost in a daydream while driving, you are in a moderate hypnotic state. We enter deep hypnosis daily as we fall asleep and wake up in the morning. Pay attention the next time you are watching a movie or reading a book; you will notice yourself completely engrossed and aware of nothing else.This is a light state of hypnosis and we enter off and on throughout the day.
Therapeutic hypnosis takes you into a deeper state, however you are still somewhat consciously aware of what is going on around you. The process is a scientific approach to access the subconscious mind. The subconscious is where real change happens. An experienced therapist knows how to safely take you in and out of hypnosis as well as what techniques to use to effect positive change while in state.
