AI, partnerships and ecosystem development: Google perspective Google unveiled its view on the future of wearable technology during its I/O 2024 event, showcasing AI-powered smart glasses with a cutting-edge heads-up display (HUD). The teaser was part of the announcement for Project Astra, a real-time multimodal AI assistant designed to understand context and assist users with diverse tasks. Let’s zoom in on Google's plans to compete in the growing XR market, using AI features, strategic partnerships, and ecosystem development as benefits, keeping a substantial focus on enterprise clients. 🔋 AI empowerment. Recently presented Project Astra is a speech model that represents Google's focus on AI capabilities with the potential to transition from a smartphone interface to the immersive experience of wearing smart glasses equipped with a fixed HUD. It aims to seamlessly integrate video and speech inputs to create a comprehensive timeline of events. 🕶 Smart glasses. While presenting Project Astra, Google showed a brief demo of AI smart glasses. Google claims it will be launched soon, and only a prototype was used for I/O, however, we can assume the company might aim for far more complex spatial interactions enhanced by generative AI. Earlier, Samsung Electronics confirmed plans for a new XR device in collaboration with Google, powered by Android and a Snapdragon Qualcomm chipset. 🤖 Android XR. Although this spatial computing platform, developed in collaboration with Samsung Electronics for their upcoming headset, was not mentioned in the keynote, it remains one of the biggest expectations for the XR market. Many market leaders are transferring to ecosystem trends, for example, Meta announcing its Horizon OS and numerous partnerships with hardware developers to engage in the ecosystem. 🏢 Enterprise focus. Google partners with HP to commercialize Project Starline, an immersive collaboration solution that aims to advance video conferencing with AI, 3D animation, and spatial audio. Planned for 2025, it will target distributed teams and hybrid workforces and integrate with major platforms like Google Meet and Zoom. The XR solution offers lifelike 3D representations without complex wearables. Google's perspective on the future of wearable technology, as Project Astra and smart glasses demo, highlights its commitment to XR and AI empowerment. The Khronos Group, which includes leading companies in the XR industry, has launched OpenXR 1.1. This update improves the standard for accessing XR technology across different platforms for diverse domains, making it easier for developers to create high-performance XR applications that work well on various devices.📱💻 OpenXR 1.1 consolidates multiple extensions into the core specification, reducing fragmentation and simplifying development for more efficient XR applications. Supported by major platforms like HTC, Magic Leap, Varjo, and Meta, it ensures improved compatibility across various devices and engines, including Autodesk VRED, NVIDIA’s Omniverse, Unreal Engine, Unity, and more, fostering innovation in the rapidly evolving XR market. At Lucid Reality Labs, we consider this update one of the most essential standards in the industry. However, it’s notable that Apple is absent from the list of leaders adopting it. Given Apple’s strong focus on its own ecosystem and strategic partnerships with Unity, it appears less likely that they will join this initiative.
