Many overlook the power of using the Shared Site in Revit for aligning Laser Scan Data (measured in meters), CAD Site Surveys (in US Survey Feet), and Design and As-Built Models (in International Feet). I have a solution to this common issue. I encourage architects and firms that use Laser Scanning services to ensure their final deliverables include a Revit Site Model set to the State Plane Coordinate System or a local project coordinate system. This strategic setup significantly streamlines the alignment between models and various linked data. The Site Model should: -Have the Internal Origin, Project Base Point, and Survey Point occupy a known Control Point. -Ensure Rotation to True North is set to 0.00° -Ensure correct conversion between US Survey Feet and International Ft. -Not contain modeled geometry; include only optimized (orthogonal and properly dimensioned) reference planes outlining the perimeter of the existing building. This aids in setting the correct orientation for new designs. Incorporating these elements into your Laser Scan Data deliverables can save days of work and reduce frustration for the design team.
