2022 marks the 190th commemoration of the Benedict family in funeral service. Samuel Husted Benedict began making caskets in 1830. He opened the first funeral home in 1832 on 60 Carmine Street, in lower Manhattan. Later he moved the funeral home to 150 West 15th Street, NYC. His son, Charles A. Benedict, second generation, handled all the funeral arrangements for the assassinated president, James Garfield. Charles A. also provided services for Ulysses S. Grant when he was interred in New York City in 1885, in the now famous Grant's Tomb.
At the turn of the century the third generation funeral director, Clarence A. Benedict moved the business north to lower Westchester. After directing services from two locations in the Bronxville area, the fourth generation, Charles A. Benedict relocated the Westchester Funeral Home to its present site at Midland Avenue and Main Street. The fifth generation, C. Alan Benedict and the 6th generation, Carrie A. Benedict Foley are seen in the accompanying photo. Alan, who began working with his dad in 1961, and Carrie, who began with her dad in 1996, continue the family's legacy of caring.
