TMD Overview

Temporomandibular dysfunction, or temporomandibular joint disorder, occurs when one or both jaw joints on the sides of the face do not function properly. This condition may be caused by trauma to the jaw, dental misalignment, arthritis, bruxism, and other issues.

Many patients seek treatment for TMD after experiencing one or more symptoms: jaw pain or tenderness, headaches, earaches, facial pain, locking of the jaw, and difficulty chewing. These recurring symptoms can greatly impact your quality of life.

Treatment for TMD ranges from repairing a chipped tooth to replacing a missing tooth to wearing an occlusal appliance or balancing the bite. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary; however, this is rare. Dr. Baier will create a personalized treatment plan to help you find relief as soon as possible.
