Sober Living Programs at Our Los Angeles Homes

If you’re looking for a place where you can get guidance, counsel, and motivation to successfully push through your recovery journey, you are in the right place.

One-on-one mentoring is a crucial aspect of addiction recovery. Through sponsorship in 12-step programs and within the recovery home as well, residents have access to the experience, strength, and hope of individuals who are further along on their sober paths.

Design for Recovery coordinates with psychiatrists and medical professionals to ensure that residents are getting the care they need. Many men turn to substances initially as a way of self-medicating undiagnosed mental health problems. For these individuals, it is absolutely essential that they receive the proper pharmacological needs that their conditions warrant as directed by their physicians. Many of Design for Recovery’s residents also benefit from medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which helps mitigate withdrawal symptoms and alleviate cravings.

Because addiction and its associated lifestyle lead to poor decision-making, many people arrive in sobriety with considerable debt on their hands. Design for Recovery’s staff works with each individual to determine their financial situation and plan accordingly. Through a combination of budgeting, debt relief programs, and employment support, men at Design for Recovery can begin to take steps toward financial freedom.

Unemployment, precarious employment, and losing a job are all common among people with substance abuse problems. For many newly sober men, getting a job or finding a career can be daunting prospects. Design for Recovery works with residents to get them placed in jobs while they live there. Working while pursuing addiction recovery not only fosters accountability, integrity, and self-sufficiency and prepares men for lives outside of a recovery home.

No one can get sober alone. Design for Recovery is committed to including family members in the recovery process. Staff members work with residents and families to repair relationships and foster productive communication.

Finally, it’s vital that all residents have a genuine commitment to sobriety and recovery. This means being willing to abstain from drugs and alcohol and actively participating in recovery-related activities such as 12-step meetings, counseling, and group therapy.

Addiction and Mental Health Among Young Adults in Los Angeles and California

img 1 1 Design for Recovery

Young adults in Los Angeles and California face significant challenges related to addiction and mental health.

According to the California Health Care Foundation, young adults aged 18-25 have the highest prevalence of substance use disorders in the state, with 14.4% experiencing a substance use disorder in the past year (CHCF, 2018).

The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 75% of all lifetime mental health conditions begin by age 24 (NAMI, 2021). The unique stressors faced by young adults, such as peer pressure, academic demands, and the transition to adulthood, can exacerbate these issues.

Our Sober Living Community That Cares

Research on addiction has long shown that helping other people with their addictions is one of the best ways of staying sober oneself. With that in mind, residents at Design for Recovery who have more sober time take on important leadership roles in mentoring newer residents. In most cases, house managers have been through this process themselves. The house saved them — now it’s their turn to help house members.

Individuals have opportunities to get involved in community leadership roles even outside of sober living communities. The men at a Design for Recovery sober living house are active in 12-step programs and support groups. Many perform community service activities in the Los Angeles community, often with special emphasis on repairing the damage they inflicted during active addiction.

At our Los Angeles sober living, staff members and residents alike understand that addiction is not an individual problem. It affects families, neighborhoods, and broader communities. While addiction tends to narrow a person’s focus to the ego, men who stay sober at Design for Recovery begin to look outside of themselves. Many ultimately find that the greatest gift of sober life and a healthy lifestyle is the strength that one can lend to others in need.

Frequently Asked Questions LA Sober Living Homes

Sober living is a Level 3 form of residential care under the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. It provides a structured living environment for individuals in recovery, focusing on maintaining sobriety and developing life skills.

The cost of sober living at our home in Los Angeles ranges from $500 to $6000 per month, depending on the type of room you choose. Private rooms are on the higher end of this range, while shared rooms are more affordable.

Residents must follow the rules at our sober living home to ensure a safe and supportive environment. These include maintaining sobriety, adhering to curfews, participating in house activities, completing chores, respecting others, and limiting visitors. Our staff helps residents understand and follow these guidelines to promote recovery and personal growth.

Most of our residents stay with us for an average of ~ 24 to ~ 36 weeks (169 to 254 days).

However, we recognize that the length of stay truly depends on the individual and their unique progress in recovery. Some of our residents may only need to stay for a few months to establish a solid foundation in their recovery journey before transitioning to more independent living arrangements. Others may benefit from a longer stay of a year or more to fully develop and practice the skills necessary for maintaining long-term sobriety. We work closely with each resident to create a personalized plan that takes into account their specific needs, goals, and progress. Our ultimate aim is to provide the support and structure our residents need to build a strong, sustainable recovery, regardless of the length of their stay with us.

For those who have completed higher levels of addiction treatment, such as inpatient or intensive outpatient programs, our sober living home in Los Angeles provides a structured living arrangement that helps them continue their recovery journey and transition back into everyday life.

We also welcome individuals who may not require intensive treatment but recognize the value of a sober living environment in maintaining their sobriety and developing essential life skills. Our home offers a safe, drug-free space where residents can focus on their recovery, build meaningful connections with peers, and practice the coping strategies and life skills they need to achieve long-term success.

Yes, we do and we are proud to be one of the few sober living homes in Los Angeles that allows pets.

We believe pets provide invaluable emotional support during recovery.

However, to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort, we do have some guidelines in place regarding pet behavior and care.

Close family members are free to visit, though it is recommended that they contact the house in advance to talk about their visit with the house manager.

Design For Recovery also organizes regular events during which family members are invited to congregate with house members.

At our sober living home, we view relapse as a serious matter that requires immediate attention. Our policies prioritize maintaining a safe and sober environment for all residents. If a resident relapses, we will work with them to address the issue and determine the best course of action, which may include recommitting to sobriety or, in some cases, finding alternative living arrangements.

Our sober living home offers life skills training to help residents transition to independent living, including budgeting, job readiness, household management, and communication skills. We also provide support in navigating healthcare, legal, and educational systems as needed.

We encourage residents to develop healthy habits and routines by providing a structured daily schedule that includes regular meal times, house meetings, and recovery-oriented activities. Residents are also encouraged to establish personal goals and work towards them with the support of staff and peers. We promote physical health through on-site exercise facilities or local gym memberships and offer guidance on nutrition and self-care practices.
