BANNED BOOK CLUB
In keeping with MCC NOVA’s mission to both inform and advocate for social justice, we’d like to welcome you to MCC NoVA’s Banned Book Club! We will only be reading and discussing books that have been banned (as identified by the American Library Association – ALA).
60% of banned books in the US were initiated by just eleven people (the same eleven people!) who found them objectionable. So we will be doing our bit by reading and discussing some of these banned books, and hopefully passing them along to someone else to read once we have finished discussing them.
The first book we will read is To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. This book won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and previously was required reading in high schools throughout the country.
The book revolves around a white lawyer, Atticus Finch, who defends a black man accused of raping a white woman in Depression era Alabama. The story of racism, prejudice, and doing the right thing, all resonate with the world we now inhabit. The main reason it has been banned is because it “makes people uncomfortable” (according to the ALA).
Genevieve will initially be leading the discussion on To Kill a Mockingbird, but we hope others will want to suggest other books from the list of 100 banned books. Interestingly, according to the ALA, in the last few years, 47% of all banned books featured LGBTQ subjects and themes and we look forward to some of them in future readings.
Please send Genevieve an e/mail HERE if you are interested in joining MCC NoVA’s Banned Book Club!

Homeless Ministry: Feed The Homeless of Fairfax Virginia! 1st Sunday of every month
While MCC NoVA has always contributed financially to FACETS, a nonprofit that aims to help meet the needs of those who suffer the effects of poverty and homelessness in Fairfax, we have recently resumed our more active contribution by physically assisting with the feeding of the homeless in Fairfax City – thanks to Team Leaders: Dale & Lee … and perhaps you? Volunteers welcome!
HOMELESS MINISTRY NEEDS:
Bottled Water, Applesauce Cups, Soft Granola bars, Small juice cartons, Feminine Toiletries, Toilet paper, Tooth brushes, Tooth paste, Wash Cloths, SOCKS, etc.
Please bring these items to the church by the end of this month so they can be distributed Sunday June 2nd.
If you would like to volunteer to help support this monthly work,
please contact Dale Bradshaw with Homeless Ministry in the Subject Line.
