STOP Inc. is a designated Community Action Agency that since 1965, has worked to transform individuals, families and communities in Eastern Virginia and Western Tidewater through collaboration, cooperation and partnerships.

STOP Inc. provides services for several populations of low to moderate income residents to include, Veterans, Elderly and Disabled, Youth, Women, Business Owners and the Homeless as well as many others. Each of these populations have demonstrated a need for opportunities provided by the Agency, however, STOP focuses its work on addressing social determinants which cause conditions of poverty for low to moderate income populations as they directly relate to Employment, Education, Housing and Health (E2H2).

PROGRAMS

Employment Supportive Services

This process offers individualized and group training in acquiring techniques necessary for seeking and maintaining employment. Services include job preparation, interview techniques, job retention, employment counseling, referral and/or placement application completion, resume writing, job readiness training, money management, understanding credit scores, establishing and maintaining good credit, overcoming financial barriers and setting financial goals. All participants in the program must be willing to pursue the necessary educational opportunities to enhance their employment options. In addition, STOP provides bus tickets or gas vouchers in an effort to assist participants in obtaining and retaining employment. Funded to Serve the Cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and the Counties of Isle of Wight and Southampton

PROGRAMS

Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP)

Nationally, the HVRP grant will help an estimated 21,000 Veterans successfully reintegrate into the competitive workforce. This program’s “Employment First” model seeks to assist homeless Veterans obtain and maintain viable employment allowing participants to earn a “living wage.” This program offers a variety of supportive services to assist homeless Veterans in their return to the labor force including occupational, classroom, and on-the-job training, as well as job search and placement assistance. Funded to Serve the Cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and the Counties of Accomack, Isle of Wight, Northampton and Southampton

PROGRAMS

Project Discovery Initiative

Eligible high school youth, grades 9 through 12, participate in the Project Discovery (Preparation for Leadership in Undergraduate School) program. Project Discovery is a post-secondary education access program currently offered through 24 Partner Agencies throughout Virginia. Project Discovery encourages students to stay in and graduate high school and provides resources and tools for students to successfully make the transition to post-secondary education. Youth are exposed to the significance of volunteerism and how it impacts their overall college application, taught which classes need to be taken in high school to ensure they meet college admission requirements and travel to visit local colleges and universities to gain first hand insight on what college life is like. Funded to Serve the Cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach

PROGRAMS

Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF)

STOP’s SSVF Vet Re-Connect Program promotes a “Housing First” model through a multitude of supportive services. SSVF is a Rapid-Rehousing Program that provides intensive case management assisting Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in obtaining safe, stable and affordable permanent housing. Assistance offered through this program includes; rental, moving costs, transportation, child care, utility fee payment, security or utility deposit, general housing stability and/or emergency housing. By placing Veterans and their families in a safe and permanent environment, their chances of achieving housing stability becomes much greater. Funded to Serve the Cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and the Counties of Accomack, Isle of Wight, Northampton and Southampton
