The filmmaker who fled his home country will debut his latest feature Friday in Competition after making a “complicated” and “anguishing” trek across Europe to a German safehouse. He’s wanted in Iran after being sentenced to eight years in prison along with physical punishments including flogging for “signing statements and making films and documentaries.” Speaking with Deadline’s Zac Ntim in Cannes, the Croisette veteran says of the people who helped him, “All I feel is gratitude.”
