Beginning in 1979, Welenco Manufacturing made the first of its unique Fireplace Heat Exchangers, creating a new efficient option for owners of traditional woodburning masonry fireplaces. To supplement the manufacturing, owners Dick Coles and Weld Huffaker also opened a local retail store. In 1985, their expanding product line grew to include a totally new home heating option: a stove that burned wood pellets. It was soon followed by another, and a fireplace insert. They enjoyed success marketing their own stoves as well as those manufactured by others, including the hugely successful Pellet Master stoves.
